Abigail Marshall Katung, a Nigerian woman based in the UK, has been elected as the Lord Mayor of Leeds in the United Kingdom. She belongs to the Labour and Co-operative Party and had moved to the UK from Kaduna State in Nigeria to pursue her studies at Leeds University. On social media, she expressed her pride and stated that she and her family are looking forward to serving the community. Marshall also acknowledged her new political role, saying that she is deeply honoured and humbled to serve as the next Lord Mayor of Leeds for the 2024/25 term. According to BBC, Katung is a governor at Leeds City College, which congratulated her on her new post. The college looks forward to continuing the collaborative efforts that provide skills and opportunities for the local community. The position of the Lord Mayor of Leeds is held by a member of Leeds City Council, elected annually by the council and is a ceremonial role.
