Wasiu Lawal, 25, was docked in a Kado Grade I Area Court in Abuja on Monday for allegedly stealing 128 litres of fuel.

Lawal, who lives in Karmo, Abuja, was charged with theft by the police.

Mr Stanley Nwafoaku, the Prosecution Counsel, claimed that on September 10, around 10 a.m., the complainant Oyoyo Joseph of Behind Arab Construction Abuja reported the incident at Utako Police Station in Abuja.

Nwafoaku claimed that on August 16, the defendant decided to steal 128 litres of fuel worth N42,000 from his residence and flee to an unknown location.

He also told the court that the defendant was arrested by the police at Life Camp in Abuja, and that Lawal confessed to the crime during the police investigation.

The counsel stated that all efforts by the police to recover the product or money were futile, and that the offense violated Section 288 of the penal code.

The defendant, on the other hand, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The defendant was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in the same amount by the Judge, Muhammed Wakili.

Wakili ordered that the surety provide a BVN printout, a recent passport photograph, and a valid identification card, which the court registrar must verify.

The matter was adjourned by the Judge until January 12, 2023.
