The Bayelsa State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) have embarked on strike, demanding the state government to pay their seven months salary arrears.

The teachers in both public primary and secondary schools are yet to resume for the 2016/2017 session.

In a statement by the signed by the state Chairman of NUT, Kalaama Toinpre, and Secretary, Johnson Hector, the union said the decision was inevitable after the 21-day ultimatum it gave the government elapsed.

The union said Bayelsa government has failed to honour the agreement that it would pay half salaries to workers pending improvements in the finances of the state.

The state Commissioner for Education, Markson Fefegha, said the government had been trying to solve the issues.

He said, “We have been meeting with the executive of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools, I have been explaining to them our efforts so far in meeting our salary obligations.”
