A recent study published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases showed that Truvada can help ward off HIV infection when engaging in unprotected sex or exposed from injection drug use.
Here are 5 things to know about the drug;
1. Truvada prevented HIV infection in all 657 patients who took it for two and a half years.
2. Previous clinical trials of the drug showed that it had a prevention rate of about 86 percent, not 100 percent as the current study says.
3. Individuals using the drugs are advised to monitor themselves for known side effects, like changes in kidney function.
4. Although HIV infections were prevented among the entire study group, Truvada did not halt infection of other sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
5. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that people on PrEP get tested for STIs every six months.
