It has been reported that President Bola Tinubu and the 36 Nigerian governors have agreed to create state police in the country. After a meeting between the President and the governors, Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and Orientation, announced this development. The structure and modalities of the state police will be discussed in further meetings between the President and the governors.
In recent times, there has been a surge in insecurity in Nigeria, with bandits and kidnappers attempting to expand their activities to other states and the federal capital territory. There have been numerous kidnappings in Abuja, with non-state actors receiving large sums of money as ransom. Although the police have made some arrests and busted terrorist hideouts, more needs to be done in this regard.
The creation of a state police structure is being considered, and its success will depend on the modalities that are put in place. The President and the governors have agreed to work together to determine how the idea will work. This initiative is aimed at curbing the activities of criminals and ensuring the safety of citizens.
