The Federal Government has honored 17-year-old Nafisa Abdullahi from Yobe State with a ₦200,000 award for her remarkable performance at the TeenEagle Global Finals in London, where she was crowned World Best in English.
The award was presented in Abuja on Thursday by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa.
Nafisa, alongside Rukaiya Fema and Khadija Kalli, had earlier been recognized by the Atiku Abubakar Foundation, which granted them fully-funded scholarships in recognition of their outstanding achievements at the global contest.
Distinguished for her mastery of English, critical thinking, and eloquence, Nafisa emerged the overall winner among participants from 69 countries, including native English speakers making history for Nigeria.
During the ceremony, Dr. Alausa hailed her victory, calling Nafisa “a shining example of resilience, talent, and excellence.” He emphasized that her achievement reflects the government’s renewed commitment to education under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
“You are the future of Nigeria, and you have made us proud. For the first time in the history of our nation, we have one of the highest budgetary allocations to education.
Each time we approach the President for support in the sector, his response has been a resounding ‘yes’ because he believes in you, the children of Nigeria.
Your success gives us the confidence to ask for more, and we will continue to do so on your behalf,” the minister said.
He also revealed that other Nigerian students who excelled in international competitions would receive additional cash prizes exceeding ₦100,000.
Similarly, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suiwaba Ahmad, praised Nafisa’s determination, encouraging her to view the achievement as a stepping stone to greater opportunities.
“Nigerian youths can compete and excel globally. Nafisa has demonstrated that Nigeria is blessed and can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best in the world. You are a shining example,” she said.
In her response, Nafisa expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, the Atiku Abubakar Foundation, Nigerian Tulip International College, and her parents for their consistent support throughout her journey.
Also present at the event, Professor Abba Idris, Yobe State Commissioner for Basic Education, congratulated Nafisa and assured that the state would continue to prioritize education and celebrate exceptional students.
