The Yoruba Nation Youths have firmly rejected any attempt to introduce Sharia law or establish Sharia courts in the South-West region of Nigeria.
In a joint statement by their diaspora leader, Ayodele Ologunloluwa, and Homebase Leader, Oyegunle Omotoyole, the group pledged to defend Yorubaland against what they described as an unwelcome imposition of foreign laws.
This declaration follows reports that the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (Oyo State Chapter) plans to inaugurate a Sharia court on January 11, 2025, in Oyo town. The event is set to take place at the Muslim Community Islamic Centre on Oba Adeyemi High School Road, Mobolaje, Agbogangan, Oyo.
Describing the proposal as “laughable,” the Yoruba youths vowed to resist any attempt to impose Sharia law in the region.
“We will resist any move to introduce Sharia law or courts in Yorubaland,” they stated. “Our culture and traditions are distinct, and we will fiercely oppose any attempt to impose alien laws. Yoruba Nation self-determination remains our focus, and we will not allow external forces to derail our struggle.”
The group also warned the Federal Government against fostering divisions in Yorubaland, asserting that Sharia law is incompatible with the values, culture, and way of life of the Yoruba people.
They added: “Sharia law will disrupt the peace of Yorubaland under the guise of religious imposition. We reject this agenda and will resist it with all our might. No force on earth or in hell can stop the rise of a sovereign Yoruba state.”
