Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has officially ended his international career, just days after being named in Nigeria’s provisional squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations set for December 21.
Ekong, who debuted for the national team in 2015, confirmed his exit from international football through a post shared on his X account on Thursday evening.
In the video, he stated: “Today, I am announcing my retirement from international football.”
Born in the Netherlands to a Dutch mother and Nigerian father, Ekong noted that wearing the colours of the three-time African champions has been a privilege.
He also expressed gratitude for the chance to inspire others, saying he was glad to “be part of the group that showed that it is possible to come home to play and represent our beloved nation.”
Ekong added that he is ready to hand over leadership roles within the team, writing:
“The time has come to pass on the responsibility, to pass on the opportunity, to pass on the captaincy.”
