The Police Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, has explained the reasons why crossdressers in Nigeria cannot be easily arrested or prosecuted. During an interview on Channels TV, he was asked about the police’s response to the controversial issue of crossdressing in Nigeria, involving public figures like Bobrisky, James Brown, and Jay Boogie.
According to Adejobi, certain cases pose significant challenges in terms of proving them in court. Using the example of rape cases, he stated that there are numerous elements that need to be proven, and failing to establish even one of them could lead to the case being dismissed.
Adejobi emphasized that you cannot arrest someone with the intention of prosecuting them without having credible evidence against them. He further clarified that, to the best of his knowledge, crossdressing itself is not illegal in Nigeria. However, the allegations against crossdressers are often based on natural offenses, which require credible evidence for successful prosecution.
In essence, Adejobi highlighted the legal complexities involved in arresting or prosecuting crossdressers, stemming from the lack of specific laws prohibiting crossdressing and the necessity for substantial evidence to prove any related offenses.
