Nigerian rapper and singer Panshak Zamani, popularly known as Ice Prince, has spoken out about his time in prison following a 2022 incident in Lagos.
In September 2022, Ice Prince was remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre by a Lagos State magistrate court for allegedly assaulting a police officer during a stop-and-search operation. He was later released after meeting his bail conditions.
Recounting His Prison Experience
During a recent appearance on the Listen podcast, Ice Prince described his six-day stay in prison as a traumatic and life-changing experience.
“Whatever story you were told is not what happened. The case is over now, so I can talk about it. I spent six days in jail. I didn’t get preferential treatment—it’s prison, not a police cell,” he said.
The rapper emphasized the stark reality of prison life, contrasting it with police custody:
“I’ve seen celebrities brag about being in police cells, but prison is a different world. I don’t wish it on my worst enemy. There are so many innocent people in there. It wasn’t a good experience.”
Lessons Learned and Friendships Made
Despite the ordeal, Ice Prince revealed that he managed to form friendships and bond with fellow inmates:
“I made friends in there. We hung out, chatted. It’s a different institution of higher learning.”
What Happened That Night
On the incident that led to his imprisonment, Ice Prince explained that it stemmed from a misunderstanding during a stop-and-search by police. He claims the situation escalated when he jokingly drove off with the officer still in his car.
The rapper now urges others to be cautious, noting how easily mistakes can lead to serious consequences. “You have to be careful out there because mistakes can take you there,” he warned.
