Senator Godswill Akpabio has received the support of President Bola Tinubu to succeed him as Senate President, according to Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South in the Senate.
This was revealed by Ndume on Wednesday, June 7, during a live interview on Politics Today on Channels Television.
He said:
“The President told me that his preferred candidate is Akpabio and I should lead the campaign.”
Senator Ndume said that he had been given the job of running Senator Akpabio’s campaign by the President.
There are several rumors about President Tinubu’s and other senators-elect’s positions inside the All Progressives Congress (APC) as they wait for their inauguration on Tuesday, June 13.
According to a number of sources, President Tinubu withdrew his support for Senator Akpabio’s bid for the Senate presidency.
According to a different story, a few senators-elect are abruptly leaving Akpabio’s side.
Senator Ndume expressed his confidence in President Tinubu’s continued commitment to his position in response to the development.
Currently, President Tinubu and the APC’s national working committee endorse Senator Akpabio.
As Akpabio’s replacement in the National Assembly’s upper house, Senator Barau Jibrin (Kano) has received the support and endorsement of the APC.
The APC chose Hon. Abass Tajudeen (Kaduna) as Speaker and Hon. Benjamin Kalu (Abia) as his deputy in the House of Representatives.
In the meanwhile, Senator Ndume claimed that Senator Akpabio has the support of 75 of the 109 other senators in the Senate.
He said:
“As at today, I am telling you we have 75 senators. All advantages are on our side. We have the support of the party, we have the support of the president, and most importantly we have the support of most of the senators. These senators signed up to endorse our programme.”
