American rap icon Nicki Minaj has opened up about what motivated her recent vocal support for Christians facing persecution in Nigeria. The music star addressed the topic during a surprise appearance at AmericaFest, responding to inquiries from attendees, including Erika Kirk.
Personal Ties to Nigeria
Minaj revealed that her advocacy is deeply personal, stemming from her strong connection to the country through her spiritual mentor and her fanbase.
She explained:
“Nigeria is a place I’ve always loved. Someone very dear to me, my pastor, is Nigerian, and I have lots of Nigerian barbs.”
Outrage Over Attacks
The rapper expressed horror at reports of violence targeting worshippers, emphasizing that such brutality should concern everyone, regardless of location.
She stated:
“So hearing that people are being kidnapped while they’re in church, people are being killed, brutalised, all because of their religion, that should spark outrage.”
Defending Religious Freedom
Minaj urged the audience not to be complacent about the liberty they enjoy, pointing out that religious freedom is under threat in various parts of the globe.
She noted:
“We take for granted that there, right now in this world, are people who cannot worship God as they please, where they please,”
A Vow to Speak Up
The “Super Freaky Girl” rapper made a firm commitment to continue advocating for believers, stating that she refuses to be intimidated.
She declared:
“We’re not backing down anymore. We are not going to be silenced by the bullies anymore. We will speak up for Christians wherever they are in this world.”
Context
Minaj, who had previously shared a post by Donald Trump regarding threats to Christianity in Nigeria, stressed the importance of strong leadership in protecting religious rights. Meanwhile, the Nigerian government has consistently maintained that the insecurity in the country affects all citizens and is not a targeted campaign against any specific faith.
