The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has postponed the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination indefinitely. This development is coming amidst the deadly Coronavirus pandemic.
The examination body announced this on Friday, 20th March 2020 in a statement made by her head of Nigerian office, Mr Patrick Areghan.
Mr Areghan announced that the exam scheduled to begin on the 6th of April, 2020 has been postponed due to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, and the scare it is generating amongst the people.
He also said that the decision is a demonstration of the organisation’s concern and support for the various protocols being put in place by the Federal and State Governments of Nigeria and the governments of the other member countries to check the spread of the disease.
Consequently, the earlier released timetable for the conduct of the examination has been suspended until further notice. WAEC however assured all candidates, schools presenting candidates for the examination, all stakeholders, and indeed, the general public that this decision will be reviewed once the health situation improves.
They encouraged all school principals presenting candidates for the examination to please inform their candidates accordingly, and assured the public that they will communicate a new date for the commencement of the examination in due course.
The Coronavirus which has infected over 270,000 people worldwide has led to the cancellation of so many events and programmes over the world.
