President Yahya Jamme of Gambia on Friday congratulated his opponent, Adama Barrow, to whom he lost the 2016 presidential election.
Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria’s former president, acted in a manner atypical of African leaders when he conceded the 2015 election to Muhammadu Buhari, the incumbent president.
In this three-minute video posted on YouTube, Jammeh is seen congratulating Barrow in a cheerful mood.
“Am calling you to wish you all the best, the Gambian people have spoken and I have no reason to contest the will of Almighty Allah,” he said.
Jammeh has been in power for 22 years. The West African country has not had a smooth transfer of power since independence in 1965.
