Controversial Nigerian social media commentator, VeryDarkMan, has publicly criticized his legal counsel, Deji Adeyanju, for cautioning him about taking unnecessary risks.
As reported by NAIJALOG, Adeyanju had taken to X (formerly Twitter) to express concern for VeryDarkMan’s safety, warning that Nigerians tend to move on quickly if anything tragic happens to someone. He wrote:
“I call VDM every time to be careful and stop taking unnecessary risks, but he doesn’t listen most times. If anything happens to you today, everyone has moved on by tomorrow. We overrate ourselves — Nigerians don’t rate anybody.”
This post quickly sparked speculation about a possible fallout between the outspoken activist and his lawyer.
Reacting in an emotional Instagram video, VeryDarkMan described Adeyanju’s comment as deeply disappointing and labeled it “the mindset of a coward.”
“I’m honestly disappointed in my lawyer, Deji Adeyanju. This post hurt me because you’re supposed to be a comrade. If it came from an average Nigerian, I’d assume they don’t know better,” he stated.
He argued that people moving on after someone dies is part of life, not a reason to stay silent.
“Yes, Nigerians will move on if I die — but who dies and the world doesn’t move on? Jesus Christ died, and the world moved on. The Pope dies, a new one is chosen. Buhari died, the country kept going. So who do you think you are?”
He went on to call out the defeatist mindset, saying:
“Anyone who says people will move on if you die is a coward. That’s the kind of fear politicians use to silence critics.”
VeryDarkMan insisted that having a platform comes with responsibility, and taking risks is sometimes necessary to speak truth to power.
“Even those who don’t take risks are still killed in their homes. Look at the killings in Benue, Borno, Taraba, Delta, and Enugu. You think you’re untouchable? We are all insignificant. People exaggerate their own importance when in truth, we are nothing.”
