Nigerian social commentator VeryDarkMan has sparked controversy by defending the recent surge in domestic airfare prices, dismissing the public outcry as unnecessary complaints from those who simply cannot afford the new rates.
In a video statement, the activist revealed his own recent travel expenses to prove his point. He disclosed that he paid ₦300,000 for a one-way ticket from Abuja to Adamawa, another ₦300,000 for the return leg, and ₦280,000 for a flight to Lagos, amounts he claimed did not bother him.
Defending Business Rights
VeryDarkMan argued that airlines are private entities entitled to set prices as they see fit. He criticized the backlash, suggesting that the outrage is an attempt to “bring down” these businesses rather than a legitimate consumer grievance.
He challenged critics, stating that if they find the prices unfair, they should launch their own aviation companies rather than attacking existing ones.
His words in part …
“I paid ₦300k for flight from Abuja to Adamawa w, Adamawa back to Abuja another ₦300k. Even Lagos flight was ₦280k. Most of you that are complaining about the airline hike, you people just want to bring them down. It is their business if they want to hike the price. If they hike the price go and buy your own airplane and star your own air business. Stop trying to bring people down if they increase price of things. Just because you cannot afford it that is why you’re talking negative about their business. Me, even if they decide to take it to N1M I can afford it, I will pay.”
