More than 160 people were reportedly killed following a deadly attack in Kwara State, Nigeria, although the exact number of victims remains uncertain as search efforts continue and several people are still missing. The incident is considered one of the deadliest attacks recorded in the country this year.
The United States condemned the violence, describing it as horrific and expressing sympathy to the families and communities affected by the tragedy. The statement also acknowledged the Nigerian government’s response to the incident.
In a message shared publicly on February 6, 2026, the US government stated:
“The United States condemns the horrific attack in Kwara State in Nigeria, which claimed the lives of more than 160 people, with the death toll still unconfirmed and many still unaccounted for. We express our deepest condolences to the families of those affected by this senseless violence. We welcome President Tinubu’s order to deploy security forces to protect villages in the area and his directive to federal and state officials to provide aid to the community and bring the perpetrators of this atrocity to justice.”
Following the attack, President Bola Tinubu ordered security forces to be deployed to protect vulnerable communities in the affected areas. He also directed federal and state authorities to provide relief support to victims and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
The attack has drawn widespread international concern, with global observers highlighting the growing security challenges facing several parts of Nigeria. Reports indicate the assault involved coordinated attacks on villages, destruction of property, and mass killings of civilians.
The tragedy has once again raised concerns about safety in rural communities and the ongoing fight against armed groups and extremist violence across the country.
