The United States government has cancelled the visas of roughly 80,000 foreign citizens including some Nigerians after a massive review targeting individuals linked to criminal or security violations.
In a statement released on Thursday, the U.S. Department of State explained that the action aligns with the Trump administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Americans.
The department described the move as “promises made, promises kept,” adding that former U.S. President Donald Trump “will always put the safety and interests of the American people first.”
Why the Visas Were Revoked
According to officials, the affected individuals were found to be involved in crimes such as theft, assault, and driving under the influence (DUI).
The breakdown provided shows:
- 16,000 visas cancelled because of DUI
- 12,000 due to assault
- 8,000 linked to theft
Authorities also noted that additional visa withdrawals were connected to more severe offences, including terrorism-related activities, threats to public safety, and overstaying visa limits.
U.S. Maintains Strict Immigration Policy
The State Department emphasized that this action is part of ongoing border protection and immigration control measures.
It also stated that the government will continue to take strict action against any foreign national considered a risk to national security or public order.
This large-scale cancellation underscores the administration’s firm stance on immigration enforcement and its determination to prioritize public safety over diplomatic or political concerns.
