There is no turning back from the union’s planned industrial action, according to Joe Ajaero, national president of the NLC.
In a statement he personally signed, Ajaero claimed that the NLC had neither changed its mind about the protests set for Wednesday nor suspended them.
Emma Ugbaja, the NLC’s secretary, had earlier made a suggestion that after meeting with the federal government delegation, organized labor will consult with its members to determine the next course of action.
Abuja, FCT – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) denied the rumor that it could postpone the nationwide demonstration it had planned for Wednesday, August 2.
On Tuesday, August 1, the union released a statement on its Twitter page clarifying that, contrary to earlier reports, neither the industrial action nor its suspension have been reconsidered.
NLC President: “We won’t back down from protesting”
Organized labor reiterated that its demands had not changed in the statement that was signed by the union’s president, Joe Ajaero.
The NLC secretary, Emma Ugbaja, was cited as saying that President Bola Tinubu’s announcement of interventions was a welcome step but was insufficient after a meeting with the federal government committee.
He then made a suggestion that organized labor, including the National Labor Council (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), would speak with their members to confer with them and come to a decision on the course of action before the protests scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday came to an end.
NLC proclaims Wednesday as the start of the protest.
However, the most recent Ajaero report revealed that the union’s choice remained the same.
The statement reads:
“We want to inform all Nigerians that we have just risen from a meeting with the Federal Government where we sought to get them to listen to the demands of the people and workers of Nigeria.”
President Tinubu promises Nigerians that a new minimum standard is on the way.
The President stated that once a deal has been reached between the government and organized labor, it will be included in the budget while making a live broadcast on Monday.
Prior to the planned NLC and TUC demonstration against the elimination of the fuel subsidy, the President spoke to the nation on Monday.
