Blessing Alims, the first female Student Union Government (SUG) president at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), has provided an explanation for her decision to appoint 50 aides upon taking office. The appointments stirred up discussions online, leading Alims to defend her actions through her Press Secretary, Madueke Chinenye.
Alims clarified that her decision was driven by a desire to ensure efficient governance and to focus on the welfare of the university’s extensive student body, which numbers over 42,000 students across 20 faculties and 110 departments. She stated, “Effective governance for a student body of over 42,000 requires a collaborative effort. It is essential to have a strong and diverse team to implement our initiatives successfully.”
She also highlighted that the appointed aides are serving in unpaid, voluntary positions, which reflects her commitment to involving dedicated individuals who share her vision for the university’s advancement. Alims further mentioned that the aides underwent a rigorous selection process, took an Oath of Office, and are eager to contribute their skills to the administration.
