The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday that no journalist has been imprisoned for responsible journalism during the tenure of Bola Tinubu. He made this statement to mark World Press Freedom Day. The minister said that the government will continue to protect the interests of journalists and will not compromise press freedom. He emphasized that the media is mostly unrestricted in Nigeria. The minister explained that spreading false information is not responsible journalism and should not be equated to genuine press freedom. He also said that President Tinubu believes that responsible media coverage is important in educating, informing, and enlightening the public. Additionally, the minister pointed out that everyone can have access to credible and timely information, and the media can play an essential role in promoting transparency and accountability. However, journalist and FirstNews Editor Segun Olatunji was held for 14 days over a publication allegedly abusing the Chief of Defence Intelligence, and the brother to Reportera News owner Chika Victor Ibezim has been held for over eight months after security forces failed to arrest his brother for alleged defamation of the former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola. These events seem to contradict the minister’s statement.
