The planned Finalissima clash between the Spain national football team and the Argentina national football team has been called off after organisers were unable to reach an agreement on a new date and venue.
UEFA confirmed on Sunday that the match, which had initially been scheduled for March 27 in Qatar, would no longer go ahead due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, making the original location unsuitable.
In an official statement, UEFA said: “It is a source of great disappointment to UEFA and the organisers that circumstances and timing have denied the teams of the chance to compete for this prestigious prize in Qatar.”
The Finalissima is a competition that brings together the winners of the European Championship and the champions of South America’s Copa America.
The last edition of the tournament was played in 2022 at Wembley Stadium, where Argentina defeated the Italy national football team to claim the first title. Later that year, Argentina’s captain Lionel Messi went on to lift the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The cancelled encounter would have attracted extra attention as it could have featured Messi facing Spain’s rising talent Lamine Yamal for the first time a matchup seen by many as symbolic between the Argentine legend and a young star tipped to become a future icon at FC Barcelona.
After the Qatar venue became impractical, UEFA explored other options. One proposal was to move the match to Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, but the Argentine side declined the idea.
Another option suggested playing the match over two legs the first in Madrid on March 27 and a second leg in Buenos Aires before the next editions of the Euros and Copa America in 2028. That suggestion was also rejected.
Organisers later considered staging a single match at another neutral venue in Europe on either March 27 or March 30, but Argentina reportedly stated they were only available on March 31. UEFA said the scheduling disagreement ultimately made it impossible to hold the match.
The football governing body concluded: “As a result, and to UEFA’s regret, this edition of the Finalissima has been cancelled.”
