University College Hospital (UCH) Ibadan, on Wednesday washed its hands off discharge of the late former governor of Oyo State, Lamidi Adesina and his subsequent transfer to and death at St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos, saying it had nothing to do to with the hospital’s incompetency to manage his ailment.
This was disclosed by the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Professor Temitope Alonge, while fielding questions from newsmen at the flagging-off of the 55th anniversary of the hospital at its board-room.
The former governor was admitted to the tertiary hospital, where he was for some weeks, before he was transferred to the Lagos private hospital, an action the UCH management said was at the instance of family and political associates.
Professor Alonge insisted that the death of the activist governor had nothing to do with his transfer out of the UCH, but due to nature, saying, death would come when it would come and it could be anywhere.
Recalling efforts made by his hospital when the late governor was rushed in, Professor Alonge, said he was brought to the hospital almost in coma, but recovered after 24 hours after which it was discovered that he had kidney challenges and was placed on dialysis.
While maintaining that the discharge and transfer of the late Adesina out of UCH was not due to inefficiency or lack of equipment, as the CMD said the hospital offered him the best that could be offered to a very important personality, but had to bow to wishes of his associates to have him transferred to a private hospital.
He said the hospital refused to grant the earlier request made by the associates to transfer the former governor out when, by the judgement of the doctors attending to him, till his condition was clinically stable and could travel for 16 hours non-stop.
Speaking on the 55th anniversary of the hospital, Alonge, who said the theme of the celebration “is ‘Rebirth of Excellence in Safety and in Health’ looked back and said, “we know our challenges and we are confronting them headlong. We would neither be discouraged nor be perturbed. We would keep trudging on to sustain the great name and achievements of the hospital”.
He disclosed that during the week long celebration, there would be the commissioning of the Chief Tony Anenih Geriatric Centre endowed by the former Board of Trustees Chairman (BoT) of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Tony Anenih, CFR.
