Doyin Okupe, the director general (DG) of Peter Obi’s presidential campaign council, was captured in a viral video begging prison officials not to jail him and to give him time to sort himself out.
The video, shared by a Nigerian with the handle @DeeOneAyekooto, was captioned “Don’t jail me until 4.30pm, please.”
Okupe is a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan who was convicted of money laundering.
On Monday, December 19, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the federal high court ruled that the Labour Party stalwart violated sections 16(1) and (2) of the money laundering act.
Okupe was sentenced to two years in prison for each of the crimes he was found guilty of after being found guilty of 26 of the 69 charges leveled against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Though the calculated prison term is 52 years, he will serve the sentence concurrently, which means he will only spend two years in prison.
The court did, however, give him the option of paying N500,000 for each of the offenses, for a total of N13 million.
The begging Okupe was doing in the viral video could be a reaction to the fine option that the court had given him.
