Twelve inmates reportedly escaped from the Federal Correctional Center in Kotonkarfe, Kogi State, early Monday morning.
The Kogi State Government confirmed the jailbreak in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Femi Fanwo. Describing the incident as “unfortunate,” he assured the public that authorities are taking decisive steps to prevent a recurrence.
Fanwo stated that the government is working closely with security agencies to uncover the details surrounding the escape. He raised concerns about the claim that the inmates fled through the tower without causing any structural damage, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation.
“This situation warrants an in-depth inquiry to determine the exact circumstances of the escape, apprehend the fugitives, and identify any possible internal sabotage,” he said.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has instructed the State Security Adviser to collaborate with the Federal Correctional Center and other security agencies to bolster security and prevent future breaches.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting federal security agencies with logistics and other necessary resources to enhance their operational efficiency.
While investigations are ongoing, Fanwo reassured residents that the situation is under control and urged them to remain calm.
“There is no reason for panic. We encourage citizens to go about their daily activities with confidence, knowing that the security of lives and property remains our utmost priority,” he added.
