“Hello dad, I just want to say a big thank you for everything. I pray God will take care of you the way you did to me. I appreciate you more than you can imagine. Please take it easy, Goodnight.”
That was the last message Dan Adebiyi received on his BlackBerry from his daughter, Adekunbi, who died in the Dana plane crash on June 3, 2012.
Dan wrote in his tribute at the memorial service held for Adekunbi at St. John’s Anglican Church, Ikoyi, Lagos, on Thursday, that his daughter was a unique person who was mature beyond her age.
He wrote, “We express our heartfelt appreciation to God for having blessed us with a unique person like Kunbi.
“When we heard about the crash, what first occurred to her mother and I was a conversation we had with Kunbi just the Wednesday before her demise. Out of the blue, she brought up the topic of tribulation and faith.”
Presentation after presentation, friends of Adekunbi gave their version of a lady who was mature more than her age.
Her brother, Ade, wrote in his tribute: “Our darling sister is gone but shall never be forgotten. As your elder brother, I would like to take this opportunity to personally say thank you to Almighty God for blessing us with such a wonderful soul.”
The deceased’s elder sister, Adebukola, described Adekunbi as a girl with a beautiful smile.
She wrote, “When I heard about the plane crash, I prayed that you would be the miracle story out of the devastation and we would found you alive and safe. I kept calling your phone hoping it would ring.”
Vicar of the church, Venerable N. Ezedairo, in his sermon, said death might be painful, but the Adebiyi family should take heart in the fact that Adekunbi was in a better place.
Ezedairo said, “Our hearts are very sore because of her death. Matters of life and death are entirely in the hands of God. Adekunbi died at the time she did because her time had come.”
Singer Lara George did a tribute presentation of her song, ‘Ijoba Orun’, making some people in the church dab their eyes with their handkerchiefs.
Her close friends also delivered a tribute in which they described the deceased as a very spiritual girl, who encouraged them with wise words.
‘Kunbs’, as friends fondly called her, was born on February 9, 1990. She held a Masters degree in Business Analysis and Management from Loughborough University, UK.
