Award-winning Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has opened up about her first reaction to one of her most popular collaborations, “Dorobucci.”
In a recent interview with NotJustOk, the singer revealed that when she first heard the song, she thought it was “crap” and had no idea she would eventually feature on it.
According to Tiwa, Don Jazzy, the producer and Mavin Records boss, played the song repeatedly while they were in Dubai for her wedding.
“He just kept playing it over and over again, and honestly, I didn’t see the vision at the time,” she recalled.
Although she tried to hide her true feelings, Tiwa admitted she didn’t think the track had much potential, a belief that would soon be proven wrong.
The Dubai Moment That Sparked a Hit
Tiwa explained that Don Jazzy had already been obsessed with the beat before recording began. After her wedding, he asked her to return to Nigeria to record a verse.
Thinking she was heading for her honeymoon, Tiwa reluctantly agreed to stop by the studio. But when she finally heard the completed version, she was blown away.
“When I listened to the final song, I was shocked. The transformation was unbelievable,” she said.
From Doubt to a Defining Classic
Tiwa confessed she was the last Mavin artist to record her verse because she wasn’t convinced about the song’s potential, similar to her earlier doubts about “Eminado,” which also turned out to be a major hit.
Despite her hesitation, “Dorobucci” became a massive success, topping charts and cementing Mavin Records’ dominance during that era.
Tiwa praised Don Jazzy’s incredible foresight and production genius, admitting he once again proved her wrong.
Reflecting on the experience, she said it taught her to trust the creative process and value teamwork.
“Don Jazzy has a special ear for hits,” she noted, expressing gratitude for being part of a timeless record.
Tiwa ended the interview with a heartfelt shoutout to Don Jazzy, calling Dorobucci a “phenomenal song” that reshaped her appreciation for collaboration and creative trust.
