President Bola Tinubu has approved the National Anthem Bill 2024, which reinstates the old national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
On Wednesday, May 29, Senate President Godswill Akpabio announced this during a joint session of the National Assembly, which also marked the 25th anniversary of Nigeria’s Fourth Republic.
As reported by Channels TV, it is anticipated that President Tinubu will be present at the joint session.
Akpabio also mentioned that the main objective of the event is to unveil the new national anthem.
President Tinubu will not be delivering a speech as he has to depart to officially inaugurate the Abuja metro line.
The Senate and the House of Representatives had previously passed the legislation to replace the national anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” with “Nigeria, We Hail Thee.”
The previous Nigerian national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” which was adopted on October 1, 1960, has replaced the former anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots.”
The music for “Nigeria, We Hail Thee” was composed by Frances Berda, while the lyrics were written by Lillian Jean Williams, a British expatriate who resided in Nigeria during the country’s independence process.
