President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has submitted the name of General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, to the Senate for approval as Nigeria’s next Minister of Defence.
The nomination was formally presented in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary, coming less than a day after the resignation of former Defence Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar.
A Veteran Officer With an Illustrious Record
General Christopher Musa set to turn 58 on December 25 is widely celebrated as one of the most distinguished senior military officers of his era.
Born in 1967 in Sokoto State, he completed his early schooling locally before advancing to the College of Advanced Studies in Zaria, where he earned his A-Level certificate in 1986. That same year, he secured admission into the renowned Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree and earning his commission as a Second Lieutenant in 1991.
His rise through the military has been defined by strategic roles and major command responsibilities across the Nigerian Army, joint military operations, and multinational missions.

Tinubu Backs Musa’s Strategic Leadership
In his message to lawmakers, President Tinubu said he has strong trust in General Musa’s expertise and leadership qualities.
“The nominee has demonstrated exceptional capacity in coordinating joint military operations and strengthening inter-service synergy,” the President wrote, affirming that General Musa is “eminently qualified to provide the strategic leadership required to further consolidate gains in our national security architecture.”
Senate Moves to the Screening Stage
The Senate has forwarded the nomination to the Committee on Defence for swift review.
Committee Chairman, Senator Ali Ndume of Borno South, announced that a public hearing and formal interaction with the nominee will take place in the coming days to meet constitutional requirements for confirmation or rejection.
