President Bola Tinubu has instructed that civil servants who continue to draw salaries while residing abroad must reimburse the government. He also mandated that supervisors and department heads of those involved be penalized for their complicity in the fraud. The directive was issued at an awards ceremony organized by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HOCSF) to commemorate the 2024 Civil Service Week.
Represented by Sen. George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Tinubu expressed concern over revelations of civil servants receiving salaries despite relocating abroad without formally resigning. He emphasized the need for accountability, stating that restitution should be made and those responsible held accountable.
Tinubu underscored the government’s commitment to addressing challenges in the civil service and ensuring optimal performance. He assured civil servants of continued support for their welfare and development to enhance service delivery.
During the event, top civil servants were honored, with prizes including a Brand New 2023 JAC JS4 Luxury Model SUV, a 2-bedroom semi-detached bungalow, and a serviced plot of land. The Nigeria Customs Service also pledged support by donating six Toyota Camry cars to recognize outstanding performance in the civil service.
