President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Attahiru Jega, former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), as his special adviser and coordinator for presidential livestock reforms.
The announcement was made on Friday, March 7, by Tinubu’s special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, through a post on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).
This appointment aligns with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which prioritizes the transformation of Nigeria’s livestock industry. Recently, the president established a dedicated livestock development ministry to transition the country’s animal farming sector from subsistence-based operations to a commercially sustainable industry.
Jega, a former vice-chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, played a significant role in the presidential livestock committee, which collaborated with Tinubu to develop strategic recommendations for sectoral reforms. One of the committee’s key proposals was the creation of the livestock ministry, which is now fully operational with an appointed minister.
At 68, Jega brings extensive experience to his new position. Beyond his leadership at INEC from 2010 to 2015, he is also a member of the International Elections Advisory Council and currently serves as the pro-chancellor and chairman of the governing council at Sa’adatu Rimi University of Education in Kano State.
His new role is expected to build upon the work of the presidential livestock committee, ensuring continued progress in the sector.
Onanuga emphasized that Jega’s expertise would be instrumental in advancing the government’s livestock reforms and fostering national development.
“His appointment as special adviser to President Tinubu will strengthen the achievements of the presidential committee and sustain the momentum of ongoing reforms,” the presidency stated.
