A 33-year-old Muslim lady from Indonesia who used the platform Tiktoker was given a two-year prison term for posting a video in which she did an Islamic prayer before tasting pork.
On Tuesday, September 19, Lina Lutfiawati, also known as Lina Mukherjee on social media, went on trial in the Palembang district court on the island of Sumatra.
She was convicted of “disseminating information with the intent to incite hatred against religious individuals and specific groups,” according to court records.
She was also fined $16,245 (the equivalent of 250,000,000 Indonesian rupiah), which is a significant sum in a nation where the annual per capita income is just about $4,300. Her jail sentence could be extended by three more months if the fine is not paid.
Mukherjee stated that the video was taken while she was in Bali, and it showed her trying babi guling, a well-known street dish made of rice, veggies, bits of spit-roasted pig, and crackling. She may be seen chatting to the camera and grimacing while trying a chunk of pork in the video.
Even though the movie gained millions of views, it was harshly condemned by religious organizations. This included Indonesia’s leading Muslim clerical authority, the Indonesian Ulema Council, which issued a ruling labeling the film “blasphemous.”
The video’s widespread popularity prompted a formal complaint, which then sparked police inquiries and ultimately the court case.
Speaking to media outside the court after the trial, Mukherjee expressed her dismay at the sentence.
“I know I was wrong but I really did not expect this punishment,” the Tiktoker said.
