The Federal Government has arrived at the Court of Appeal in Abuja to begin its appeal against the judgment that cleared Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), of terrorism charges.
The government has asked the Appellate Court to stay the execution of the October 13 judgment, which voids Kanu’s rendition from Kenya to Nigeria due to violations of local and international laws.
A notice of appeal labeled CA/ABJ/CR/625/2025 and obtained by DAILY POST stated that the Federal Government’s motion on notice would be decided by a three-judge panel of the Court.
At the time of writing, Chief Mike Ozekhome, SAN, who is supposed to lead Kanu’s legal team, had arrived in court with Mr Ifeanyi Ejiofor, another senior lawyer on the team.
Our correspondent also observed heavily armed police officers stationed at the Court’s entrance, screening all incoming vehicles and their occupants to avoid security breaches.
It will be remembered that in a unanimous judgment delivered by Justice Adefope-Okojie, a panel of Justices of the Court led by Jumai Hanatu Sankey had voided Kanu’s rendition to Nigeria on the grounds that due process of law was not followed.
Following that, the appellate court dismissed Kanu’s terrorism charges and discharged him from them.
