In collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System (NIBSS), the Federal Government of Nigeria is launching a new national identification card. The card is designed to have payment and social service delivery capabilities, and is supported by the NIMC Act No. 23 of 2007. The card will provide verifiable national identity features, promote financial inclusion, and empower citizens by enabling access to government and private services. The new national ID card comes with features such as machine-readable zones, biometric authentication, offline capability, and functionality as a debit/prepaid card. To be eligible to request the card, only registered citizens and legal residents with a National Identification Number (NIN) will be considered.
