Popular Nigerian singer Gabriel Oche Amanyi, aka Terry G, has addressed criticism surrounding his appearances at political events, stating clearly that performance does not equal political support.
Speaking on The Real Shareholders podcast, Terry G explained that as an independent artist, he performs wherever he’s booked and shouldn’t be judged for doing his job.
“In today’s economy, getting a gig from a political party is a privilege,” he said. “That doesn’t mean I’m affiliated. I never endorsed any party or candidate. I simply performed, like many other artists do.”
He emphasized that fans should judge him based on his words, not his bookings:
“If I had told people to vote for APC, that would be different. But I didn’t. I was just there to perform.”
Terry G had previously faced backlash after performing at President Bola Tinubu’s pre-inauguration concert in May 2023. Later that year, he also accused some individuals within the APC of hijacking his payment for the performance.
The artist maintains that his work should be viewed strictly as entertainment — not political alignment.
