The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed grave concern about the safety of one of its Imo State candidates.
The PDP raised the alarm on Saturday, February 25, over what it described as ongoing attempts by armed agents in the state to assassinate Hon. Uju Kingsley Chima, member of the House of Representatives representing Ohaji-Egbema, Oguta, and Oru West federal constituency.
Chima is also the PDP candidate for the constituency in today’s elections, Saturday, February 25.
Collins Opurozor, the publicity secretary of the PDP in Imo State, said in a statement that he had escaped assassination twice, including on Friday night, February 24.
He said,
“Our party alerts Nigerians that in the last three days, our candidate has escaped by a whisker, two very brutal onslaughts targeted at his life. Just as he was wrapping up his campaigns at Umuapu in Ohaji-Egbema, three days ago, these state-sanctioned terrorists stormed the arena and unleashed mayhem on our candidate, not only sparing our party members and other innocent citizens of Imo State.
“Till this moment, the attacks are yet to abate, as an armoured tank is still stationed in front of his residence and the terrorists are still operating unhindered. This is happening in Imo state on election day!
Residents in Rivers State awoke to reports of attacks on the homes of two politicians by unknown assailants just 24 hours before the country’s presidential and national elections.
The Nigerian Guardian has learned that hoodlums allegedly threw dynamite at the home of Dr. Tamunosisi Jaja, the immediate past Commissioner of Water Resources.
According to newspaper reports, one of the assailants was killed in the process.
On Wednesday, February 22, unknown gunmen attacked Enugu state and killed Oyibo Chukwu, the Labour Party senatorial candidate for Enugu East Senatorial District.
The politician was assassinated on his way back from a campaign rally in the southern state of Enugu.
After shooting the late Oyibo Chukwu, the attackers burned his body.
