Serena Williams has firmly dismissed circulating rumors suggesting she altered her appearance by lightening her skin. During an Instagram Live session on Monday, the retired tennis icon directly addressed the speculation while applying makeup.
“For the critics out there, no, I do not bleach my skin,” Williams said, debunking claims about changing her natural complexion.
The rumors started after Williams shared a video from her daughter’s school play, which prompted social media users to comment on what they perceived as a lighter skin tone.
Clarifying the situation, Williams attributed the appearance to natural factors like sunlight. “There’s this thing called sunlight, and under it, your skin can appear in different shades,” she explained. Additionally, she noted that stage makeup, which she wore while volunteering backstage at the event, contributed to the altered look.
Although Williams emphasized that she has no problem with individuals who choose to change their appearance, she made it clear this isn’t something she has ever done. “I am a proud, dark-skinned Black woman. I love who I am and how I look,” she declared.
