A teen sacrificed himself to save the life of his first love, pushing her out of the way of an oncoming train that killed him.
Mickayla Friend, 16, was walking to her high school dance in Marysville, California, with her boyfriend, named online as Mateus Moore.
The couple was walking along train tracks when a train approached from behind.
According to local TV news station KCRA, the conductor blew the horn and slammed on the emergency brakes.
Miss Friend’s sister, Alithya said the young couple had made detour to buy some food on the way to the dance at the Marysville Charter Academy for the Arts, where both were students.
An eye witness said the teens noticed the train at the last moment.
“The engineer was on the horn. Then finally, they both looked back at the same time,” witness Sean Stark told KCRA.
“They would have both been underneath that train if he didn’t push her out of the way at the last second.”
Moore was reportedly killed at the scene. His girlfriend is believed to be in critical condition at a local hospital.
Alithya Friend said: “You can’t imagine getting the worst call in your life, knowing that you just dropped your sister off to go to a dance that was supposed to be a special, amazing night for her and her boyfriend of a year.
“And then you get a call that says he’s deceased and she’s in critical condition.”
