U.S. Senator Ted Cruz has renewed calls for targeted sanctions against certain Nigerian government officials, citing escalating attacks on Christian communities nationwide.
Cruz issued the statement on Monday via his official X page, accusing authorities of fostering conditions that allow large-scale killings to continue without consequences.
Cruz Praises Trump’s Previous Actions
The senator also acknowledged former U.S. President Donald Trump for what he described as decisive leadership on the matter. Cruz noted that he previously introduced a bill aimed at formally designating Nigeria over what he referred to as ongoing “atrocities” committed against Christians.
Push for Sanctions Intensifies
According to Cruz, the next step should be the implementation of sanctions against officials allegedly responsible for failing to safeguard vulnerable populations or prosecute those behind the attacks.
His comments come at a time when global attention is increasingly focused on the surge in violent incidents across parts of Nigeria, particularly in regions battling religious and communal unrest.
Continued Global Concern
Human rights advocates and religious organizations have repeatedly appealed to international bodies to intervene, arguing that insecurity has deepened while government response remains inadequate.
The Nigerian government, however, maintains that claims of religious persecution are inaccurate, insisting that Nigeria is a secular state and that ongoing violence stems primarily from criminal activity rather than faith-targeted assaults.
Despite this, Cruz’s renewed call for punitive action has intensified scrutiny on Nigerian authorities as conversations surrounding human rights and security continue on the global stage.
His words:
“Christians are being mass slaughtered in Nigeria.
Thank you to President Trump for his strong leadership and action in responding to this crisis.
I filed legislation to designate Nigeria for these atrocities, and the next steps are targeted sanctions on the government officials who create the environment for the mass murders and then fail to take action against the perpetrators.”
