The ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ singer has surrounded herself by a number of high-profile girlfriends – including Lorde, Lena Dunham and Selena Gomez – and insisted she would much rather focus on female friendship than romance.
She told The Guardian newspaper: ‘Without a doubt. Because the other alternative isn’t really possible right now.
‘It just doesn’t seem like a possibility in the near future. It doesn’t ever work. What works is having incredible girlfriends who I can trust and tell everything.’
The star has recently announced her new single ’1989‘, which – rather than being about the sad side of love – is about the independence that comes from being single a single woman, living ‘on your own terms’ and proving you can ‘do it’ on your own without the need for a man or relationship.
She added: ‘It’s the phase after that [jilted, sad, pining], when you go out into the world and make changes in your life on your own terms, make friends on your own terms, without [literally] saying ‘C’mon girls, we can do it on our own.’
