The Super Eagles secured a commanding 4–1 victory over Gabon in their 2026 World Cup playoff semi-final on Thursday night.
Nigeria advanced to the mini-tournament as one of the top runners-up from the main qualifying stage, finishing just behind South Africa, who earned the automatic spot from Group C.
The Eagles controlled much of the first half but couldn’t capitalize on their dominance. They also escaped a scare when Bright Osayi-Samuel’s shirt pull was reviewed by VAR, but the referee ultimately chose not to give a penalty.
In the 78th minute, Adams Akor broke the deadlock, slotting home a loose ball into an open net. Gabon equalized 10 minutes later after Mario Lemina’s deflected shot slipped past Stanley Nwabali.
Early in extra time, Chidera Ejuke converted Wilfred Ndidi’s assist to put Nigeria ahead again, before Victor Osimhen sealed the win with two goals.
The Super Eagles will now take on the winner between DR Congo and Cameroon for a chance to secure Africa’s spot in the intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March 2026.
