The moment a student was crushed to death as he stepped into a malfunctioning lift has captured on CCTV footage.
The unnamed man was unable to move away fast enough as the lift unexpectedly moved upwards as he stepped inside.
Images showed him stuck between the floor of the lift and the top of the door at Huaqiao University in the city of Xiamen in south-east China’s Fujian Province.
A three-minute video from the lift’s surveillance camera showing his death went viral in China after being uploaded to social media.
The man is believed to have been an architecture student at the university.
Another student who was waiting for the lift said a small group of people were waiting for the lift when the doors opened on the third floor.
As he stepped inside and the lift began to move, the witness said the young man seemed more surprised than worried at first.
The lift the slammed his body between floors and the man suffocated due to the pressure on his chest.
Rescue workers tried to free the man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The university is now being investigated over safety concerns.
