The duo of ex-international football stars, Jay Jay Okocha and Kanu Nwankwo, have been unveiled as ambassadors of Star Football, a sports platform championed by Nigeria Breweries, makers of Star beer.

At a media briefing held at the BeerHugz Cafe, Ikeja, Lagos on Monday, May 12, 2014, the marketing director of Nigeria Breweries, Walter Drenth, reiterated Star’s preparedness to support the Nigerian team and its fans towards victory in Brazil next month.

‘Star Football is a platform that will completely change the way consumers experience football henceforth. #ShineOnNigeria, a platform to recognise and reward Nigerian football fans, is the first project we will be rolling out from Star Football. We have also partnered with cable network giant DSTV, to air all FIFA 2014 world cup matches live throughout the tournament,’ Drenth said.

Explaining the choice of Nwankwo and Okocha, Drenth said there is a need to celebrate the positive attributes of Nigeria’s heroes.

‘You would agree with me that Okocha and Kanu have not only made Nigeria proud through football but have become role models for Nigerians who seek to emulate their victories on the pitch,’ he said and urged Nigerians to adopt #ShineOnNigeria as the victory chant.

Both Nigerian football legends were absent from the press briefing.

The event had in attendance Kufre Ekanem, the company’s corporate affairs adviser; Tokunbo Adodo, marketing manager Star/Goldberg; and Edem Vindah, the brand PR manager. Also in attendance were Tosyn Bucknor and Sports journalists, Moses Praise and Colin Udoh.
