South Africans on X are criticizing singer Tyla after she tweeted in support of Nigerian model Chidinma Adetshina, who recently withdrew from the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant following an investigation into her nationality.

Adetshina, a 23-year-old law student, explained that her father is Nigerian while her mother is South African with Mozambican heritage.

However, some South Africans questioned her citizenship and called for her removal from the pageant on social media.

In response, the South African Department of Home Affairs launched an investigation into Chidinma’s background and found that the identity of a “legitimate” South African mother “may have been stolen” by Adetshina’s mother, leading Chidinma to withdraw from the competition.

Reacting to the backlash against Chidinma, South African singer Tyla expressed that while she loves her country, she does not support bullying. However, many of her fellow South Africans disagreed and took to the comments to criticize the ‘Water’ singer.
