Nigerian singer Skales has shared a glimpse into his challenging upbringing, recalling how he once lived in a hut with his late mother in Kaduna before his rise to fame.
Speaking on A TownHall Different Podcast, Skales opened up about the struggles of his early years, explaining that life was far from easy for him and his family.
He recounted how they often spread mats on the floor to sleep until they eventually moved into a boys’ quarters (BQ).
First Time Owning a TV
Skales also revealed that he didn’t have access to television growing up. It wasn’t until he was signed to Banky W’s record label, EME, that he finally owned a TV for the first time—an experience he found both exciting and unbelievable.
In his words:
“I’ve been through a lot. I come from Kaduna from a poor family. My mum was a teacher. I used to live in a hut before we moved to like BQ. A proper, we sleep on the floor with mats, and my mom would put wrapper on the floor. So coming from that situation, to becoming who I am right now is crazy men. Sometimes I just look at it and I’m like that’s crazy. I never saw TV. The first time I saw TV was when EME signed me. Like to have my own TV in my room.”
