Six suspects have been apprehended in connection with the murders of South African rapper Kiernan Forbes, also known as AKA, and his close associate Tebello “Tibz” Motshoane. The incident occurred a year ago outside a restaurant in Durban.
According to Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the provincial police commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, hitmen were paid to target AKA, although the motive remains undisclosed. Surveillance indicated that AKA was monitored from the airport, and Tibz was an unintended victim in the murder on Florida Road in Durban.
The arrests revealed that the suspects were compensated for their actions, with some of them allegedly linked to other murder cases. Exhibits recovered include four vehicles, firearms associated with the murders, and empty cartridges.
The suspects, all under 36 years old, are set to appear in court by Thursday. Minister of Police Bheki Cele, confirming the arrests, acknowledged the disturbance caused by the killings, captured on CCTV cameras, and expressed hope for a sense of relief among South Africans.
The motive behind the murders is of interest, with indications suggesting a premeditated and coordinated effort rather than a spontaneous act of anger. AKA, known for his contributions to the rap group Entity before embarking on a successful solo career, has received numerous awards both locally and internationally.
