Award winning singer Omawumi has spoken about the issue of domestic child abuse in BBC’s latest episode of Africa Beats. Using her hit single ‘If You Ask Me’ as source material, the recently engaged mother of one reveals that the song was inspired by a true life event of a father sexually molesting his own daughter.

Omawumi also spoke about the negative action by Nigerian families of not talking about domestic child abuse because of the fear of stigma. In the clip she encourages affected families to speak about such issues and bring the perpetrator to justice. She also said that popular acts should do conscious music once in a while, and shouldn’t release feel good songs all the time.
