Nigerian vocalist Shola Allyson has finally addressed the controversy surrounding her decision not to explicitly use the name of Jesus in her lyrics. While often categorized as a gospel artist, Allyson faced significant backlash on social media in March 2025 for allegedly omitting direct references to Jesus in her music.

At the height of the criticism, the singer took to X (formerly Twitter) to push back against the pressure, stating:

“No one can bully me into joining their darkness that looks like light because indolent souls find comfort in it”.

The Explanation

During a recent interview on Oyinmomo TV this Saturday, Allyson provided further clarity on her stance. She emphasized that she does not label herself as a religious artist.

She explained:

“I’m not a religious singer. As I am, I have never introduced myself as a gospel singer. My name is Shola Allyson. I’m a singer”.

When the interviewer noted that “Some people said you don’t mention ‘Jesus’ name’ in all your songs”.

Allyson promptly responded:

“Jesus did not instruct us to mention his name in songs nor did Jesus ask us to do PR for Him”.
