The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has bemoaned the poor attitudes of the terminal operators and shipping companies to ports regulation.
Executive Secretary of the Council, Barrister Hassan Bello disclosed this at a press briefing recently, recalled that the terminal operators who are currently against regulation of their tariffs had benefitted from the action of the Council when the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) set out to introduce new tariff against them.
Bello explained that the terminal operators had applauded the council when it stopped the NPA’s new tariff, in fact, describing the ports regulator as the best thing to happen to the industry.
But he said that the terminal operators thereafter saw the council as an enemy when their own tariffs against importers were reduced.
According to him, this was the kind of challenges the regulator has encountered, but said that it would not stop the Council from performing its role.
He explained that regulation was for the interest of all, adding that it was for the best interest of the national economy.
It would be recalled that the Ports regulator is currently in court with the terminal operators and shipping companies..
