Pop star Shakira has been hospitalized in Peru due to a stomach-related health issue, leading to the cancellation of her scheduled Sunday performance in the Andean nation.
The Colombian singer shared the news with fans via social media on Sunday, expressing her disappointment.
“I’m sorry to let you all know that last night I had to go to the emergency room for an abdominal issue and I’m currently hospitalised. The doctors taking care of me have let me know that I’m not well enough to perform tonight,” she wrote.
Shakira had arrived in Lima on Saturday, marking her first performance visit to the Peruvian capital in over a decade. Videos on her social media showed throngs of excited fans welcoming her at the airport.
Despite the setback, the singer remains hopeful. “I hope to be better by tomorrow and that they release me from hospital as soon as possible to be able to put on the show that I’ve prepared for you all,” she said in her post.
Shakira, widely known in the Spanish-speaking world for hits like La Tortura with Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz and her 2023 diss track about ex-partner Gerard Piqué, produced by Argentine DJ Bizarrap, is considered a pioneer in bridging Latin music with the English-speaking market.
Her global hit Hips Don’t Lie with Wyclef Jean, featuring her signature hip-shaking moves, remains her most popular track to date.
Reports indicate her next concert in Lima is scheduled for Monday, following the tour’s kickoff in Brazil last week.
